UK saved more than $10 billion from health benefits of cycling

Since 2003, the city of London has been imposing a congestion charge on motorists entering the city, in efforts to reduce pollution and congestion. Because of this, the city has seen a 30% rise in cyclists during this period. Research shows the health benefits from cycling and walking have saved the UK more than £7bn (US$10.8bn) over the past 20 years. An additional £200m a year in absenteeism costs has been avoided as well as 30 million kgs of carbon emission. Research conducted by sustainable transport charity, Sustrans.

Considering the enormous potentials, its no wonder why Sustrans is recommending the ministers to target 5% of the transport budget, for cycling. Worldwide, transportation is the fastest growing source of carbon emissions and accounted for more than 2,000 megatonnes of CO2 in 2010. These numbers are significant enough for everyone around the world to want to take action.
