The Keto Diet

If you are on any type of social media or listen to the news, you've probably heard about the newest diet craze, the Keto diet. From celebrities to neighbors who live across the street, you know someone who is singing the Keto diet praise hymn. If you have questions regarding the pros and cons, as well as how the Keto diet fits in with your cycling schedule, we have some useful info for you.

What is the Keto Diet?

The Keto diet, short for ketogenic diet, is a low-carb diet that helps with the production of ketones in the human body. According to an article on Diet Doctor, ketones are molecules produced by our liver from fat, when the body is not producing enough blood sugar or glucose. A short supply of carbs and protein is key to producing ketones, so on the keto diet, these must be cut out. When you are no longer making glucose, your body turns to burning fat in order to generate energy. It's been praised for its benefits for weight loss, health, and performance.

Keto Pros

In an article for HVMN, Nate Martins described how the type of calories you ingest are more important than counting calories. While counting calories is important, it's not totally necessary while on the Keto diet. This is because different types of calories have different effects on your body. By cutting out carbs, you are eliminating many of the calories that negatively impact your body. Exercise also plays an important role in this. The longer one stays on this diet, the more productive your body becomes at burning fat.

Keto Cons

Like most diets, the Keto diet is controversial amongst experts. Healthline.com reports that the Keto diet should only be used for short periods of time. It is recommended that you keep your doctor informed if you are on the Keto diet so that they can monitor your progress. The Keto diet can cause something called the Keto Flu, which causes new dieters to feel fatigued and have stomach problems. This is temporary and will pass after a few days. One of the biggest concerns with the Keto diet is a lack of electrolytes, so it's important to stay hydrated while on this diet.

Keto and Cycling

Samantha Lefave is a long distance cyclist who is on the Keto diet. She says that the first two weeks she felt like she was in a fog, but then her body adjusted. She has adjusted her diet to accommodate her body's needs and recommends that other long distance athletes do the same. Another cyclist, Victoria Bussi, drank HVMN Ketone drinks while training for the Hour. The 31-year-old woman broke the record. Victoria credits her win with a change in nutrition as well as her conditioning.

Before starting a new diet, be sure to check in with an experienced dietician or physician. They will be able to provide you with tips on how to safely follow the diet plan. Do your due diligence and seek out all pertinent information. Be aware of your habits while dieting so you don't go to dieting extremes.
